On Sunday 16 year old Bresha Meadows was reunited with her family after serving an 8 month sentence at a juvenile detention center and a mental health facility. For those of you who aren't familiar with Bresha Meadows , in 2016 she pled guilty to delinquency by reason of involuntary manslaughter for shooting and killing her father 41 year old Jonathan Meadows. According to Bresha and her mother Brandi , Jonathan was extremely abusive towards Brandi on a daily basis throughout their 18 year marriage.
Brandi's injuries ranged from broken blood vessels, broken ribs, black eyes, abrasions to her face and body. Bresha ran away from home many of times to escape her tumultuous family life , but she finally had enough in July 2016 she shot her father in her mother's defense. At first she faced the possibility of being tried as an adult for aggravated murder which could've possibly lead to a life sentence. Luckily for Ms. Meadows she was only sentenced for 8 months and will now be on probation for the next two years.
However, every mother and daughter in these predicaments aren't always so lucky. Tondalao Hall a victim of domestic abuse is currently serving a 30 year sentence for failing to protect her children from her abusive boyfriend Robert Braxton Jr. Hall reported that she and her children endured abused on a daily from Mr. Braxton , she claims he would also keep her away from her family and friends. After noticing severe bruising on her son , Hall brought her children into the hospital to be checked out. Turns out the children were suffering severe injuries including fractured femurs, broken ribs and toes. Not long after the visit Hall and her boyfriend were arrested on child abuse charges.
Tondalao Hall was sentenced to 30 years after accepting a blind plea deal, Robert Braxton Jr. was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to child abuse against the victim's daughter. His sentence was then reduced to two years in prison and 8 years on probation. This sentence was and still is unjust, completely biased, and unfair, although Ms. Hall should've contacted authorities sooner about the child abuse , she was too a victim. She should've been reprimanded but not to 30 years in prison, that's insane.
How is it that the abusers get slaps on the wrist and the victims have to suffer? This is the sad reality for most women who have retaliated against their abusers. Victims are made to feel like they did something wrong by our system, the system should protect and defend victims not sentence them to hard time.
In Bresha Meadow's case the possibility of her being tried as an adult should've never even been a thought or a possibility, prosecutors should ask themselves the question what would you have done if you were in that young lady's shoes? Same thing with Tondalao Hall, yes it easy for most of us to say what she should've done however we don't know what we would've done had we been in that predicament.
